RECOMMENDING A FRIEND OR COLLEAGUE FOR A JOB?

1. GATHER DATA - Ask your colleague for a copy of the position description and job listing. many writers repeat qualifications, flubbing the chance to extol the candidate's character traits, something a Resume can't convey. 2. AVOID THE SPOTLIGHT - Dedicate only a sentence or two to your own introduction. Cite the number of years and capacity in which you and your colleague worked together. Anything more takes the focus of the candidate. 3. TELL A GOOD STORY - If you remember your friend's game-changing idea, it'll also stand out to an employer. Write the anecdote highlighting your colleague's positive traits and how he of she benefited the company. 4. WHITTLE IT DOWN - Keep it to one page, max. Recruiters read a lot of these. For LinkedIn recommendations, aim for a one-paragraph summary. Any longer takes attention spans.
