Thomas Hayes -
Trey for short - is a 20 year-old incredible young man and currently an aspiring health buff. I met Trey at our gym - Brick Bodies (Padonia) in Maryland and learned so much, after a quick introduction. In fact, Trey learned when he was 15, that he had a serious form of cancer - an osteosarcoma on his left leg.
At this point, as Trey told me, his "life took a turn that eventually put him on the path to success and fitness". Trey also said - "I was diagnosed at my sophomore year of high school with osteo sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and consequently for the past 5 years has been my motivation and drive to prove everyone wrong that said I couldn't do or its too difficult, based on my conditions. However, I have bet the odds and overcome barriers and difficulties". Trey has had 5 knee replacements and been cut open more times than he can care to remember. Since his first knee replacement he have played 2 years of varsity lacrosse, became an avid golfer, and turned himself into a gym rat. Trey hopes that through his life he remembers to never let his aliments get him down and always strive to be better tomorrow than he is today.
1- (Me): Tell us what has been this experience and at what point you felt your life had changed?
(Trey): "My life all changed after I went to Physical therapy after my first biopsy and finding that at 15 i was diagnosed with osteo sarcoma(Cancer). I found the people at PT hugely inspiring to make me realize just because I was going to undergo multiple surgeries, I could still live the active and healthy lifestyle, I wanted to with little to no limitations".
2- (Me): If you could go back in time, is there anything different you would have done? And Why?
(Trey): "If I could go back into time I would have tried to give 10% more effort in Pt so I could have healed that much faster. That being said I still feel as though I gave 100% to get myself back on my feet and back to fighting shape as fast as possible".
3- (Me): From your experience what would you tell others?
(Trey): "My experience has taught me that knowing your body and how it is suppose to feel is very important. I have always been active and, as soon as, I felt as though something was wrong I had a doctor check it out and essentially that saved my life. I would just urge others to play it safe when it comes to your body and get problems checked out early so they can be treated as soon as possible".
4- (Me): What is your favorite thing in life at this point?
(Trey): "My favorite thing in life is the fact that I can serve as an inspiration to others that feel as though they're never going to be normal again. I just say that normal is only a word and you should strive to be better and healthier than normal".
5- (Me): Where do you see yourself in the future, and how this experience played on your expectations?
(Trey): "Down the road I see myself as a top physical therapist specializing in post-surgical procedures. I'd like to be able to stay fit and healthy and show others that nothing should stop them from living the same way".
