Men’s Guide to Rocking the Athleisure Trend

How to Wear Plaid to a Holiday Party and Not Be That Guy

The right way to make plaid work for you.
Holiday party style for men is about one thing and one thing only: plaid. Sure, velvet has its moments. And we've gotten down with a jewel tone or two. But really, the head honcho of the holiday party wardrobe is and will always be the heritage pattern in all its fantastic iterations. Even though it's a standby move for throwing back a candy cane-infused cocktail or seven, that doesn't mean it's always the easiest thing to figure out how to wear.
Here are five of them and how to make them work for you......

Bomber Jacket

If you're committed but not married to check, Armie Hammer's Tommy Hilfiger bomber jacket is a great way to go about wearing it during this time of year.

The bold pattern amps up everything from denim to slick black trousers but can be taken off as the night wears on and the dance floor heats up for a more minimalist look.

Retro Runners

If you own a black suit that fits you like a glove and/or have a healthy sneaker habit, Damson Idris's way of rocking holiday plaid is your move.

Not only are the actor's tartan Burberry sneakers a totally unexpected way to wear the pattern to a party, but they bring a level of comfort to formal wear that's usually off limits. Take advantage.

Punk Pants

The bravest and baddest holiday party hoppers will forget about being subtle and go straight for the Johnny Rotten-inspired trousers, like Lucky Blue Smith in his Burberry pants here.

What we like about the model's spin is that he finished the look with a shiny bomber jacket and pointy boots so the whole kit felt fancy enough for cocktails.

We're not asking you to wear a bowtie or anything, but a little formality helps.

Two-Button Suit

A red check suit is a lot to ask of a man, so we don't blame you if you want to go a little bit tamer for a holiday party.

A simple black and white check, like the one on Timothee Chalamet's Gucci suit, is a festive but more wearable alternative.

Just like Lucky Blue, Chalamet added a little Out of Office swagger with black boots instead of dress shoes.

Throw in a clean white shirt buttoned all the way up and you've got look worthy of a GQ slow clap.

Oversize Topcoat

Jerry Lorenzo and his Fear of God stylings are, you know, a very specific kind of look. But! The man is cult-loved for a reason: his style instincts are spot on.

The oversized check topcoat is just about the coolest, most DGAF way to do plaid at a holiday party this season and, as we've stated before, the whole idea is to wear it over anything and everything in your closet.

So while, yes, this look is specific to Jerry and his FOG tribe, the concept applies to all style rebels.

Now, go out and have some fun during the Holidays with the great fashion that fits ya......
